It’s a step into the unknown for both of these teams as they make their bow in European Championships finals. The pre-tournament Wales v Slovakia betting odds suggest a close fought encounter, with Wales being narrow favourites. It might be worth looking at Slovakia on the Asian Handicap with any Wales v Slovakia free bets, as not losing this match could well be the priority for both teams and taking Slovakia on the Asian Handicap can cover the draw and a Slovakia victory.
Wales have a hard-working and well-organised team, but can also count on flashes of brilliance from Aaron Ramsey and, in particular, Gareth Bale. That might be enough to secure sufficient points to progress to the last 16, but it looks a fairly even and tight group and they can ill-afford to lose their opening match against the perceived outsiders.
Slovakia might not have anyone quite in Bale’s class, but Napoli’s Marek Hamsik isn’t that far short. They also have captain Martin Skrtel with a wealth of big match experience at the back. Where Slovakia struggle is up front and there lack of a reliable goalscorer has seen the 34 year old veteran striker Robert Vittek recently recalled.
These two have met a couple of times previously, with both results raising a few eyebrows. The games were both qualifiers for Euro 2008, with Slovakia winning 5-1 in Cardiff, before Wales gained revenge with a 5-2 victory in Trnava. A similar goal-fest in Bordeaux would be welcome for those with no allegiance.
Slovakia could be awkward opposition in Group B. They defeated Spain in the qualifiers, so are more than a match for anyone on their day.
