Mahester City crept through to the Carabao Cup quarter finals on Tuesday night in what was quite a surprising evening for Pep Guardiola’s side. They had made a number of changes to their side and Championship leaders Wolves were the impressive opposition, but it saw a rather abrupt end to what has been the most remarkable run of goalscoring form.
It will be interesting to see whether the Citizens can pick up the baton when they travel to face a struggling West Brom side at the Hawthorns this weekend. Amazingly, the runaway Premier League leaders are averaging over three goals per game so far, but face a team who have dropped off dramatically under Tony Pulis in recent weeks. The Baggies remain in a healthy 13th position, but have not won in nine games in all competitions. They will fear facing a team in such form.
Our betting tips suggest City will view the Wolves game as a blip and find their feet again. Playing away from home should make very little difference in truth, because they are both so open in attack but don’t concede many either. Fernaninho and John Stones have been unsung heroes for City this season, while the likes of Kevin de Bruyne, Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling have taken all the plaudits. For all the criticism they received for poor defending last season, they are certainly not getting the praise they deserve this year.
Speaking of Aguero, he is still hunting that goal that will see him overtaken Eric Brook as the club’s all time record goalscorer. The Argentine is currently tied with Brook on 177, and after missing the opportunity to do so in midweek, he will be keen to overtake at West Brom. Guardiola has rarely dropped him in favour of Gabriel Jesus, it is usually the other way around, and we believe he will get and take that chance at 5/2 in an away win.
But such is the variety of their attacking threat, they can turn it on at any moment. Against Burnley last weekend, they were stumped for long periods, but two late goals gave them a 3-0 win. It is a dangerous game not to back them with a high scorer at the moment, and that is why we are saying either 3-0 again at 7/1 or a -2 handicap at 19/10 – West Brom just doesn’t seem in any shape to stop them right now.
Key Battle: Gareth Barry vs David Silva
The world is finally waking up to Kevin de Bruyne’s talents and West Brom will surely look to mark him out of the game at the Hawthorns, but the most brilliant thing about City is if they do that, it will only leave more space for the likes of Silva, Sterling and Sane.
The Spaniard is ageing, now 31, but remains a world class playmaker. He has the quality to find his teammates with a key pass even when under immense pressure. Barry is now the Premier League’s all time record appearance maker and remains very popular with City having enjoyed a successful spell at the Etihad Stadium. Silva is just one of an amazing array of talents, but Barry must keep his former teammate quiet if West Brom want to avoid a hiding, let alone get a result.
