Mbappe has the Golden Boot in his sights…

Uruguay showed their steel against Portugal in their World Cup round of 16 tie  last week. The game played out as many expected it to; both sides have set themselves up as defensively organised teams with a plan to allow their talented forward player, namely Edinson Cavani, Luis Suarez and Cristiano Ronaldo. Free flowing football was not a regular occurrence in the match, but the Uruguayans ran out 2-1 winners. Cavani stole the show on that occasion, and the fact he scored a brace to level himself up with Suarez is a good omen. With both strikers in form, Uruguay have a chance of progression, but we are backing France to win out in this one because they have more quality across the pitch.

Les Bleus have been far from convincing at the World Cup overall, but they may have found top gear in their victory over Argentina in the last round. Kylian Mbappé certainly did, winning a penalty and scoring two more in the 4-3 win; like his Paris Saint-Germain teammate Cavani, the 19-year-old has found his feet at the right time. While Antoine Griezmann has scored twice this summer, both have come from the penalty spot and he has not hit top gear. Mbappé has looked France’s most dangerous player, and it is again likely he will be at the heart of things again.

Like Uruguay’s clash with Portugal, this game clearly has its winners. In his current form, it is extremely hard to look past Mbappé as an anytime goalscorer. He is well priced at 21/10 and that should not be underestimated. This game may not be a classic because Uruguay don’t play in an expansive way, but it certainly will be interesting.
