They say that styles make fights and as UFC reaches Canada on Saturday, tall and ruthless striker Carlos Condit will face 170lb contender and BJJ expert Demian Maia in an intriguing, contrasting clash of styles inside the Octagon.
The UFC betting odds for the UFC on Fox 21 Vancouver event couldn’t be closer, with Coral offering a top price of 11/10 on Demian Maia, while BetVictor offer the best odds on Carlos Condit at a price of 10/11.
Carlos Condit and Demian Maia have both tasted the high life in very different ways during their extensive UFC careers. Condit was the interim UFC welterweight champion, before losing the 2012 fight of the year to Georges St. Pierre despite dropping him with a memorable head-kick.
Maia meanwhile, is a fourth-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and has often been considered the floor art’s greatest practitioner in the MMA world. After his 2010 loss to Anderson Silva began a 6-5 stretch.
Carlos Condit is just 2-4 in his last six fights, but those four losses came to Georges St. Pierre, Johny Hendricks, Tyron Woodley and Robbie Lawler, the last four men to hold the UFC welterweight title. The “Natural Born Killer” only fights the best and considering his threats of retirement, you have to feel this is a real crossroads bout for Condit.
Tactics will be simple for both men. Maia will be looking to get this fight to the ground as quickly as possible in order to look for a submission victory, while Condit will be looking to get Maia into a stand-up fight, which will suit the taller and more potent striker perfectly.
This is a very tough match-up for Condit and 4 of his 9 losses have been via submission. In terms of predicting the outcome, it will very much depend on Condit’s ability to stay on his feet. Over 5 rounds, Maia is sure to get his chance to close the distance, get a take down and work for a choke.
