Tip For Friday’s Gosforth Park Cup At Newcastle: Dakota Can Strike Gold In Friday’s Gosforth Park Cup At Newcastle

Dakota Gold – 20-1 with bet365. 7.30pm Newcastle. Friday 29th June

ITV cameras will be at Newcastle’s all-weather track on Friday evening where the feature race is the valuable Stobart Energy Gosforth Park Cup Handicap at 7.30pm. The five furlong speed test has attracted an entry of 33 possibles but with a maximum permitted field of just 14 a number of fancied contenders look likely to miss the cut for the Class 2 contest.

Recent winners Hadaaf and Tanasoq head the betting on 5-1 with most bookmakers and while the former is guaranteed his place in the line-up the latter needs four horses above him in the weights to come out if the five-year-old is to be given the chance of completing a four-timer on Friday evening. Line Of Reason, Orion’s Bow, Paddy Power and Poyle Vinnie are others prominent in the ante-post market who are far from certain to make the final 14.

One horse who, at number 6 in the current pecking order, looks well treated on a mark of 97 and is available at a very generous 20-1 with bet365 is the Michael Dods-trained Dakota Gold. The four-year-old had some excellent form to his name last season in six starts, winning twice and only just losing out on the other four occasions. The son of Equiano was runner-up to both Bacchus and Major Jumbo, beaten a short head and neck respectively and with those two sprinters finishing first and third in Saturday’s Wokingham at Royal Ascot the form looks rock-solid.

On his most recent start at York the mount of Connor Beasley missed the break and could never get competitive from his low draw and it is best to put a line through that below-par performance. Prior to that Dakota Gold failed by only a length to give the weight to a couple of decent horses in Soie D’Leau and Blue De Vega at Thirsk and having been dropped 2lb by the handicapper since then should run a big race if handling the artificial surface.

Richard Fahey’s consistent Eastern Impact may prove the chief danger following his excellent second at Newmarket earlier this month.
