Sweden vs Switzerland preview, betting tips and prediction
Which surprise package will come out on top?
Switzerland to win by exactly one goal @ 16/5 with Paddy Power
Sweden and Switzerland meet on Tuesday afternoon at the Krestovsky Stadium. Both sides fully deserve their places in the last 16 of the World Cup, but this tie is perhaps the least exciting on paper. Neither can take the other for granted; Switzerland have lost just once in two years and earned a draw with Brazil in their opening game of this tournament, while Sweden topped Group F, which Germany failed to progress from, and got past both Holland and Italy, the biggest sides in Europe not to be at the tournament. Vladimir Petkovic’s Swiss side have remained organised and never know they are beaten. This game will be tight and their mentality could get the victory for them, booking a place in the quarter finals.
The way Sweden dismantled Mexico will give them confidence that they can unlock a very tight defence on Tuesday. Emil Forsberg and Marcus Berg have been threats up front and will continue to be so here. From a Swiss point of view, Breel Embolo must start the game; he showed against Costa Rica that he can offer a new dimension to their attack, alongside Xherdan Shaqiri, who always looks to create something from nothing, and Blerim Dzemaili has been a constant threat with his late runs into the box. Switzerland’s main issue is their lack of a potent striker. Josip Drmic came off the bench to score in the last game, but Haris Seferovic and Mario Gavranovic have looked far from convincing.
Their lack of a real attacking threat up front means value in the goalscoring markets will come from elsewhere. Shaqiri looks like being the most important player in this regard from the Swiss point of view and he can be found at 3/1, but our tip is Drmic at 11/4 with Paddy Power. He looked the most convincing of the Swiss attacking options. In terms of Sweden, we think the most likely goalscorer is Berg at 23/10.
