It’s been a good season for Monaco, all things considered. Sure, they’re a long way off from successfully defending their title. Soon enough, it will be mathematically ruled out as a possibility. Their Champions League campaign was a horror show. There’s no defending that. But Leonardo Jardim deserves credit for keeping the Monaco ship afloat after the all-things-of-value-must-go sale of the summer. Most of the key components of their title-winning campaign had been sold on, giving Jardim a rebuilding job.

And he’s done that remarkably well. Monaco are building for the future and they’re doing so with a number of stop-gap solutions to bridge the gap. Players like Stevan Jovetic are showing that they can still offer something, if not delivering on the promise that they once had.

It begs the question though: Is this simply the cycle resetting? Will Monaco fans be forced to watch great teams being dismantled, all for the sake of pragmatism? One could argue that the cycle hasn’t even fully reset yet. There are still assets to be sold and one of those is Thomas Lemar. The France international is said to be close to agreeing on a deal with Liverpool. A fee of £70 million has been mooted.

Lemar was on hand to provide an assist in Monaco’s most recent win, a 2-1 comeback against Bordeaux. Monaco haven’t lost in the league in 2018 and aren’t expected to slip up at Strasbourg this weekend. They have a comfortable recent record against the relegation-battlers, hitting eight goals and conceding none in their last three wins. We expect this to be as straight-forward.
