Spain vs Morocco preview, betting tips and prediction
La Roja have looked good so far but can improve
Spain to win with a -1 handicap @ 11/10 with Betfair
Spain face Morocco in their final World Cup group game knowing a positive result will see them through to the last 16, possibly as Group B winners. There haven’t been many great performances from the top sides at this World Cup, but La Roja have arguably been the most impressive, dominating the extremely energetic game against Portugal for long periods despite drawing and then beating Iran. Diego Costa has struggled to find his feet in a Spain shirt, famously not having a shot on target in the 2014 World Cup, but he has been in excellent form, scoring three goals already and leading the line well. Morocco hugged and puffed against Portugal in their second game of the tournament, but after successive defeats they are already out. Spain should be able to flex their muscles a bit here and get the win.
After recovering from the drama surrounding their managerial situation just before the tournament, when Julen Lopetegui was sacked for taking the Real Madrid job without informing the Spanish Federation, they are seen as one of the teams to back for glory. Morocco will be a threat, particularly on the counter attack; they have a lot of good players in midfield, such as Hakim Ziyech and Younes Belhanda, who created a lot of chances against Portugal. Unfortunately, the best of them fell to captain Mehdi Benatia, a defender, and he squandered them. But it promises to be an open game with a lot of quality on show for both sides.
Backing Diego Costa to score will only yield value if you do so first, at 11/4, rather than anytime, for which he is 10/11. None of Spain’s creative talents have scored this summer yet, but as this game will afford them more space in the midfield, we think Isco may be a good anytime tip at 9/5. Morocco may get on the scoresheet, too, and if they do, Ziyech will he their biggest threat. He can be found at 5/1, which could be worth a punt.
