Betting Tip: Backing a home win with a -2 handicap at 13/5 with Betfair

Arguably the best rivalry in Europe, Celtic vs Rangers has been missed over the past few years. When the Ibrox club were liquidated and sent all the way to the Scottish third division. In their absence, Celtic have strengthened their stranglehold on the game north of the border and now look stronger than ever. It looks hard for anyone, Rangers included, to stop them any time soon. That will show at Celtic Park this weekend.

When the Old Firm met at the home of the champions earlier in the season, Mark Warburton’s Rangers were humiliated with a 5-1 defeat, a game which included the incident that started Joey Barton’s exit from the club. Now, Warburton has gone too, and although Pedro Caixinha is being lined up as his replacement, at the time of writing it is uncertain whether he will be installed in time for this game. If not Graeme Murty will remain in caretaker charge and it will be such a test of his credentials so early in his career.

Celtic winning the SPFL is nothing new in football betting, but the manner in which they are this year shows signs of genuine progress. Under Neil Lennon and most definitely Ronny Deila, the lack of competition was perhaps the main factor in their success. Few players in either of their teams would make much of an impact in the Premier League, for example. Striker Moussa Dembele, who scored a hattrick in that 5-1 win, is being tracked by European giants, while Scott Sinclair played for Manchester City. Brendan Rodgers, the manager, almost took Liverpool to the title.

Dembele has found the standard to be too easy this year and may have to leave to develop. He will once again prove the difference in this game, taking advantage of Rangers’ uncertainty. The handicap offers decent value, but it isn’t unrealistic to suggest a -3 handicap at 6/1, either.
