Tottenham face their biggest Champions League test on Tuesday night when they travel to face Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu. The European champions will be huge favourites for victory in this game, but they cannot afford to take a Spurs side who have looked very good on the road in the Premier League and Europe lightly.
With Harry Kane in sublime form this season, prompting speculation linking him with a move to Los Blancos, the visitors will always have an outlet in attack. Crucial for Tottenham is finding a way to get a foothold in the game; not many teams can match their energy in midfield, but Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Casemiro will control the tempo and it could be very easy for Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli to link up with Kane and that is the main reason Mauricio Pochettino’s team are such a threat. Pushing their fullbacks up as usual will also be a risk, especially down the left hand side where Marcelo links up with Cristiano Ronaldo so devastatingly.
Where Tottenham will have the upper hand is midfield physicality; the more they impose that the better their chances of threatening. Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane are both brilliant defenders, but the high line Zinedine Zidane uses, especially with Marcelo so keen to get forward, will leave space to exploit if they can break through the midfield lines. It is tough to see Pochettino going direct, and with either Isco or Gareth Bale likely to cut inside from the right-hand side, they could be picked off woth ease if they press high.
For that reason, Real are clear favourites. Goals may have been a problem earlier in the season domestically, but six goals in two games suggests otherwise in the Champions League. Against West Ham, Spurs showed how staying compact can make them vulnerable and although BTTS is well priced at 29/20 for a home win, the odds are rightly stacked against the English side. Another three goals are far from out of the question for Zidane’s men, and 3-1 feels like a good option, particularly at 9/1. There is more possibility, if less value, in backing Real Madrid in both halves at 21/20 – all of these odds are with Coral.
Key battle: Isco vs Ben Davies
Since replacing Bale on Real Madrid’s right flank due to the former Spurs man’s injury problems, Isco has added a new dimension to their play. Not only do they maintain the width with the overlap from the fullback, but they also benefit from an extra number tucking inside at times. When he plays more centrally, he can impact the game more, similarly to Eriksen for Spurs.
He can also go on the outside, meaning Real can double up on Davies and stop him offering the outlet Pochettino will demand he offers in attack. It is best if he holds his position and passes Isco onto Eric Dier if he does look to cut in and run directly at the Spurs defence. His variety could be the definitive factor in grabbing a crucial win.
