This game is perhaps the most eagerly anticipated of the entire group stage, with a newly star-studded PSG side playing host to Bayern Munich. Both of these clubs are among the favourites for the competition, and will likely be contenders until late on in proceedings. In truth, it is tough to know who will come out on top at the Parc des Princes.
Everybody knows the transition PSG went through in the summer, breaking the transfer market not once, but twice to sign Neymar and Kylian Mbappe for almost £400million combined. As a result, the pair, alongside Edinson Cavani, who cost a measly £54millon back in 2013, make up arguably the most exciting attacking trident in the game right now. Goals are almost guaranteed, even against a defence as strong as Bayern’s. But the Germans are not as strong as in previous years, having already lost to Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga; they currently sit second, an unfamiliar position, behind Borussia Dortmund. Although they beat Anderlecht in the opening game of the Champions League, they didn’t have it all their own way.
There is a lot of speculation over the future of star striker Robert Lewandowski, too, but the Pole’s presence will make Bayern a real threat in attack. For all that is made of PSG’s quality going forward, they are not as strong as Bayern across the pitch, and a lack of protection for the defence could leave them susceptible to the visitors on the break. The pace of Arjen Robben and incisiveness of Thiago will give Bayern opportunities, and at 10/3 for the score draw, 13/5 for any win or 7/2 with BTTS, Paddy Power have been rather generous with their offers on such a good side.
But looking at PSG and particularly Neymar and Mbappe, it is hard disagree that they will be favourites. Supplied by Marco Verratti and Adrien Rabiot in midfield, they should have the ammunition to hurt Bayern, especially with goalkeeper Manuel Neuer out for months through injury. The movement of the front three is dangerous, and man-marking them could be very dangerous. It will be an open game, but a tight one too. If it goes to the wire, 4/1 is a very worthwhile price for backing PSG. Home advantage could also play a big part too.
Key battle: Marco Verratti vs Thiago
Forget Neymar, Mbappe and Lewandowski for a second. One of the most mouth-watering match ups of this game will be Verratti vs Thiago. It is hard to know which of these two sides will dominate the ball, because neither alternates their tactics to fit the match like so many do in the Champions League. It will come down to this battle for supremacy.
Perhaps Verratti is the better passer, whereas Thiago excels with dribbling, but both will have a profound impact on this game. Thiago Motta’s presence next to Verratti may free up the Italian, but one of the main reasons this game is so big is the battles all over the pitch; whoever controls the match wins it, possibly, but whoever wins this duel controls the match.
