Roaring Lion – 9-4 with Coral. 2.10pm Sandown Saturday 7th July.

The score between Investec Derby winner Masar and the John Gosden-trained Roaring Lion currently stands at 3-0 in favour of the Godolphin-owned colt. But it could be a case of fourth time lucky for the son of Kitten’s Joy when the pair meet again on Saturday, this time in the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse at Sandown Park.

The first time the two horses met was in the bet365 Craven Stakes at Newmarket back in April when Roaring Lion was sent off the 8-13 favourite based on his creditable neck second to subsequent Qipco 2000 Guineas winner Saxon Warrior in Doncaster’s Racing Post Trophy as a juvenile. Masar proved far too good on that occasion running out a convincing nine length victor over White Mocha with Roaring Lion a head back in third. Excuses could be made for John Gosden’s charge however as the mount of William Buick enjoyed a significant fitness advantage having raced in Meydan over the winter.

Since then Charlie Appleby’s charge has prevailed over his old rival on another two occasions, the first when the pair finished third and fifth respectively in the first Classic of the season at Newmarket prior to a re-match in the Investec Derby at Epsom when the New Approach colt allayed any stamina doubts by running out a convincing 16-1 winner from Dee Ex Bee with Roaring Lion coming home a gallant third. In Saturday’s Coral-sponsored Group 1 however the 1m 2f trip could tip the balance in favour of Oisin Murphy’s mount based on his hugely impressive victory in York’s Betfred Dante Stakes ( one mile two and a half furlong ), the most significant of all Derby trials.

Ten horses remain in the mix for one of the major horseracing highlights of the summer but many of those will be missing come the final declaration stage on Thursday and this looks a straight fight between the two principles with Roaring Lion fancied to gain revenge at last on his great rival.
