Paul Pogba will the name on everyone’s lips in the build-up to this fixture but the new Manchester United signing mightn’t even start due to a lack of match fitness. Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini combined well in their midfield partnership in the win over Bournemouth. The only reason to drop either player would be to give other members of the squad game-time. Now we’ll see how liberal Jose Mourinho will be when it comes to giving minutes and rotating.
United were impressive in that win at Dean Court and the odds are low on Mourinho picking up three points in his first Old Trafford outing in the Red Devils dug-out. That’s despite Southampton leaving Manchester with a scalp after each of the last two fixtures. Mind you, that was a team with a very different rhythm, Mourinho’s look much more fluid and inventive.
Claude Puel is also still finding his best team and could lose Jose Fonte to United or Arsenal. The Portugal defender is yet to make his Premier League season bow but could do so on Friday. Southampton drew 1-1 with Watford in their opening fixture. Expect goals and a United win.
