Arsenal stopped the rot against West Brom on Boxing Day. The Gunners had triggered a meltdown among supporters when they fell to consecutive defeats against Everton and Manchester City respectively. It was civil war on Arsenal Fan TV.
Olivier Giroud kept the blood-thirsty mob at bay with a fine cushioned header from a tremendous Mesut Ozil cross, the Germany international returning to the fray after simply watching proceedings in their previous outing. Check Reddit for the reference.
Arsene Wenger didn’t soak up all of the ire of supporters over recent weeks. Even Giroud was subjected to criticism after his match-winning turn. The forward doesn’t move enough, fans complained. He was reasonably quiet for the whole game before powering a header home.
The Gunners managed to beat Bournemouth at the Emirates in November but mightn’t have things their own way when they visit Dean Court on Tuesday. Helpfully, Jack Wilshere won’t be able to play. The on-loan midfielder has been a star for the Cherries this season. He had their best opportunities to score in their recent 3-0 defeat to Chelsea.
That scoreline didn’t fairly reflect how close that game seemed at times. We think Bournemouth could get something here, adding to Wenger’s winter woes.
