Chelsea v Southampton Betting Predictions – Back a Home Win at 3/1 with Skybet
Chelsea have hit a bit of a brick wall in their chase for a domestic double this season. They may have made it past Tottenham and into the FA Cup final on Saturday, but recent defeats to Crystal Palace and Manchester United have seen Mauricio Pochettino’s men close the gap on the Blues from ten points to just four.
Antonio Conte must ensure the Blues keep their nerve between now and the end of the season, as they have been so great at doing all season. They have been more or less imperious at Stamford Bridge, losing only to Crystal Palace and Liverpool, who share similar abilities to play at pace on the counter attack. With the second best overall home record in the league, behind Spurs, and the best attack, the Blues have been able to edge closer to a fifth title with every passing week, something the bookies are getting attractive Premier League offers for.
Southampton have enjoyed an unspectacular season under Claude Puel, failing to maintain the European push from the days of Ronald Koeman but still reaching the League Cup final. On the face of it, with very little to play for, they are the perfect opponents for Chelsea.
The Saints do not play with the same pressure and intensity anymore, instead looking towards a slower, more technical build up. As mentioned before, Chelsea’s biggest issue has been dealing with pace, but searching balls into Manolo Gabbiadini could cause real problems if they get over the heads of N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic in the holding role for the Blues.
Southampton have been pretty good defensively away from home, conceding just 22 goals, but they have not been as potent in attack, scoring just 20. Puel may ask his players to sit deep, and if he does so, the main man for Chelsea will become Cesc Fabregas. Conte has utilised the Spaniard in games where he expects to dominate the ball, and Fabregas will put former Chelsea midfielder Oriol Romwu under pressure. Romeu has been a standout performer at St Mary’s this season, but may find it tough if doubled up on by Fabregas and Eden Hazard, who often cuts inside from wide areas to create space for Marco Alonso behind him.
This game is just another obstacle for Chelsea and one that they should pass with ease despite Southampton’s undoubted quality. A three-goal win may seem a little steep, but it is definitely worth a 3/1 Skybet free bet.
