Newcastle United are back in the Premier League, looking to build something big under Rafael Benitez this season. They face last season’s runners up Tottenham at St James’ Park first up, and it will undoubtedly be a tough task for the Magpies.
Rumours have been rife on Tyneside that Benitez is not particularly happy with the lack of transfer activity. Big signings had been expected, but so far, only £30million has been spent on five different players. Spurs, too, have not made any big splashes yet, much to the frustration of some of their fans.
But it won’t be a walkover for Spurs, either. Mauricio Pochettino’s side will rightfully come into this game as favourites, but they have traditionally struggled against Newcastle, losing their last meeting 5-1 at St James’ Park in May 2016. Any newly promoted side is bound to put up a fight on the opening day, especially one with 52,000 fans behind them. It will be Spurs’ job to keep them quiet and if possible turn them against the hosts.
Our three betting tips all point towards this game being extremely tight. Newcastle are looking a bit bare up front, with doubts over Aleksandar Mitrovic’s ability to lead the line and further questions over Dwight Gayle and whether he can translate his goals from the Championship to the Premier League. For Spurs, the 45-goal pair of Dele Alli and Harry Kane, who has never scored in August, will be a huge threat, and the movement of their side will make it tough for Newcastle to contain them, especially if Christian Eriksen joins Alli and exposes the likes of Jonjo Shelvey.

Spurs will grow into the game the longer it goes on, and their quality will shine through. But it will be a closely fought encounter too, and they will have to be prepared to match the effort of the Newcastle players. If they do that, they should edge it, but from a betting point of view, this could be a tough one to call.
Key battle: Jonjo Shelvey vs Mousa Dembele
Like all close games, this one will likely be decided by the midfield battle. Both Dembele and Shelvey are crucial members of their teams, but for different reasons. In the Championship, Shelvey was the first port of call for attacks through his ability to pick a pass, mainly looking for Gayle. But for the Spurs man, it is all about his technique and energy. Stopping either will be huge if there is to be a winner in this one.
