Marseille want to put a humiliating week behind them with a win against Nantes this weekend. Rudi Garcia’s side had been flying high in Ligue 1 but were brought back down to size by two clashes with bitter rivals Paris Saint-Germain.

Traditionally one of the biggest rivalries in French football, back-to-back Classiques only served as a wakeup call to Marseille. PSG strolled to successive 3-0 victories and then proceeded to troll their rivals on social media.
“Thanks for passing by the capital,” PSG tweeted after Wednesday’s win. “You can come back anytime you want, you’ll be well received.” It’s more humble pie than Marseille would have liked. The experience can be used as motivation to improve and eventually reach a level where they can compete with the team who have a bottomless pit of cash. Oh, wait. Scratch that.

Nantes have been in dire form for some time now. A run of just one win in their last nine games may have been caused by manager Claudio Ranieri getting a bit distracted. The former Leicester coach is among the favourites to become the next Italy boss and has courted speculation, saying that if he was offered the chance, he would ask Nantes to release him from his contract. If things don’t pick up, he might end up with neither job.
