Manchester United face a potential banana skin in the FA Cup third round when they welcome Derby County to Old Trafford on Friday night. Jose Mourinho’s men will be rightful favourites and on paper it could seem like a bit of a mismatch against the Championship side, but Gary Rowett has turned them into a very organised team and this will be far from an easy ride for the Red Devils.
Their recent struggles could make this one tough and Derby could push them all the way. But United should get through in the end.
So much has been made of Manchester United’s recent slump and Mourinho’s attitude within it. During the month of December, the Red Devils went from having an outside chance of winning the Premier League to temporarily going third in the table thanks to draws against the likes of Leicester, Burnley and Southampton. They stopped the rot and climbed to second again by beating Everton on New Year’s Day.

Derby climbed to second in the Championship with a draw at home to Sheffield United on New Year’s Day, stretching their unbeaten run beyond six games. The Rams are now two points clear of third placed Cardiff and seven points ahead of their opponents who are seventh and just outside the playoff places.

A goal in the win at Everton was well timed for Anthony Martial, with both Romelu Lukaku and Zlatan Ibrahimovic out injured. Jesse Lingard also netted to continue his great form; they will be the two biggest attacking threats for United and we are tipping the latter to net anytime.
Derby have no fresh concerns ahead of this clash.
