Manchester United’s form has dipped a little recently, with their away form proving problematic. Defeats to Huddersfield and Chelsea in the Premier League, and more recently Basel in the Champions League, have halted what looked like the progress of a steam train earlier in the campaign. But they have been imperious at Old Trafford, with Dwight Gayle of Newcastle scoring the first goal to be conceded there all season only last month – that game ended in a 4-1 home win.
Failing to beat Basel last time out means United still need to avoid defeat in this one to secure top spot. More importantly, though, it opened up the race for second. The Swiss side and United’s next opponents, CSKA Moscow, are locked on nine points, with the former ahead only on goal difference. CSKA must win this game to have any chance of progression, because Benfica can quite frankly not be trusted to help them out having lost all five games played.
We expect United to stay professional and get the job done, meaning Basel join them in the next phase.
Manchester United look a different side when Paul Pogba is in the side. He spent weeks out injured after pulling up with a hamstring injury against Basel, and since he’s returned, for the most part, they have been excellent; the exception obviously coming against Basel at St Jakob Park. Unfortunately for Jose Mourinho, the France star will miss the Manchester Derby next week through suspension after a red card against Arsenal at the weekend, but he was once again instrumental as the team went onto record a crucial 3-1 victory.
CSKA shocked many by going to Lisbon and beating Benfica at the Stadio Da Luz on matchday one, and they have continued to impress throughout the competition. They have the quality to hurt United, who are still waiting for Romelu Lukaku to find his goalscoring form again. Alan Dzagoev is their main creative threat but they do have an ageing defence with the likes of Aleksei and Vasili Berezutski and Sergey Ignashevich all well over 30 and could be put under strain by United’s pacey attack.
Manchester United may rest Nemanja Matic ahead of the Manchester City game because he was struggling ahead of the Arsenal game but did make the squad. Phil Jones’ absence will continue, with Eric Bailly also absent, Marcos Rojo, Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling made up a back three at the Emirates Stadium and they could again. Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcus Rashford will provide other options if Mourinho wants to shake things up ahead of the derby.

Georgi Milanov will miss out for CSKA, as will Georgi Schennikov. But manager Goncharenko should have a string squad to choose from.
