The difference Paul Pogba made to Manchester United’s performance level in their comprehensive 4-1 win over Newcastle last weekend was immense. The French midfielder has been sorely missed in the weeks he has been recovering from a hamstring injury. The pace and energy was back in their play and although it took time, by the end they were too much for the Magpies to handle.
Jose Mourinho will be pleased to see another Premier League home fixture coming round the corner, especially against another newly promoted side. Although Brighton have been going well in their debut campaign, they will surely offer another opportunity for the Pogba-inspired Red Devils to build more momentum. Chris Hughton’s Seagulls sit ninth on 16 points from 12 games, a fantastic return; but only one win has come on the road. United are yet to drop a point at Old Trafford this season, and we fully expect them to keep that run going in this one. It will take a lot for anyone to stop them, let alone a side still getting used to the highest level.
Such are the small margins for error in the Premier League this season, Manchester United find themselves eight points adrift of neighbours Manchester City at the top of the table. Mourinho’s men have only lost twice and have dominated most games they’ve played, but City are yet to slip up properly. All they can do is keep the pressure on. Those defeats have come in games against Huddersfield, City’s opponents this weekend, and Chelsea, who now sit just a point behind them in third. The absence of Pogba brought back memories of last season’s frustrations, with Romelu Lukaku’s early goals drying up. It is no surprise that the Belgian netted when their record signing returned last week, and he is a good bet to do so again here.

Brighton are looking more than solid at the moment, having fought back from behind twice to rescue a point against Stoke on Monday night. They have not lost at the Amex Stadium since August, but they are not as solid away despite a recent win at Swansea. In the last six games, they have only lost once, to Arsenal, but they face a tough test in this one.
Not only did Manchester United welcome Pogba back from injury on Saturday, but Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marcos Rojo and Marouane Fellaini too. The latter trio are not likely to start, as Mourinho will most likely name the same team. Though he could welcome back Phil Jones, who picked up an injury on international duty with England, much to his manager’s annoyance.

Hughton could be without a key midfielder for the trip to the North West with Dutchman Davey Propper struggling with a thigh problem. Steve Sidwell will also miss out but the visitors have no fresh concerns after Monday night.
