If ever there were a football match that signalled a humbling before kick off, it comes this weekend at the Etihad Stadium. Crystal Palace travel to face Manchester City in complete disarray, rock bottom of the Premier League having lost all of their five games so far. Sacking Frank de Boer after just four of those summed up their current mess perfectly; it is now up to former England boss Roy Hodgson to get the wheels back on their season and set them in motion. But they face a City side rampant right now, with goals coming from all over the pitch.
While Pep Guardiola’s men have scored 15 goals in their last three games in all competitions alone, Palace are yet to score at all. Without goals, it goes without saying points aren’t very likely; the Eagles are lacking a lot of what makes them tick with Wilfred Zaha out injured, as they are not as effective on the counter attack or as direct with getting the ball into Christian Benteke. Hodgson may well shore them up in defence, but with such a lack of confidence, it is hard to see them living with the likes of Sergio Aguero, who has scored five goals so far, Gabriel Jesus, who has scored four, and all the other attacking options Guardiola can call upon.
Palace have lost three of their Premier League games 1-0, which suggests they do not let games get away from them often. But having conceded in the opening ten minutes in both of their last two games away at Burnley and at home to Southampton. Do that against Manchester City and it will likely end in a cricket score; Sergo Aguero FGS and 4-0 seems great value at 15/1 given recent games, as does exactly four goals scored at 7/2.

Kevin de Bruyne has been an unsung hero so far this season because of his new role under Guardiola. The Belgian has played as a deep-lying playmaker, pulling the strings and setting others up but rarely getting on the end of chances himself. Given how Palace are likely to set up with 10 men behind the ball, he will find joy in an advanced position and could get on the scoresheet. He and Aguero are at 7/2 both to score, but SkyBet offer other combinations. Aguero and Jesus are at 11/8.
Key battle: Benjamin Mendy vs Andros Townsend
Crucial to Manchester City’s attacking play is how their fullbacks get forward and join in attacks, but the main threat from Palace will come from out wide too. Townsend will cut inside from the right to shoot which could cause Mendy some problems, wrong footing him.
Townsend will look to get close to Benteke when he can, but if they are defensive, Palace will have to break out more often, leaving Townsend will a lot of ground to cover. It is tough to see the visitors getting anything from this game, but Townsend will be the key man if they do.
