Up until last week’s draw at Liverpool, in which Manchester United sat back and defended for the majority, Jose Mourinho’s side had shown a killer instinct in front of goal that was really lacking last season. Their defence has always been excellent, conceding just two goals, both in one game, in the Premier League this season. But going forward, Romelu Lukaku has been a revelation, top scoring in the division with seven goals in eight games.
Huddersfield had started excellently this season, winning their first two games. But as expected, they have fallen off the wagon recently and haven’t won since. Conceding four against Tottenham in a recent home game suggested they struggle when facing a side who will stop them playing their usual high energy game and dictate the play themselves. United will look to stay solid and keep the foothold, invite the Terriers onto them and transition into the counter attack, allowing Lukaku to push forward, Mourinho has begun to play one technical player and one pacey player either side of the Belgian. Expect to see Heneikh Mkhitaryan and Anthony Martial in attack too; perhaps Juan Mata, with the Armenian in behind.
Lukaku can be found at 23/10 as FGS in an away win, understandably short considering his fantastic form but still well worth a bet. Martial is finally performing consistently after a tough year last season, and at 9/2 with Betfair on the same bet, he could be worth a go, although he has mainly been playing out wide under Mourinho.
Everything points to a comfortable away win here; the fact Huddersfield have such low confidence tells a real story, because that was what gave them the base to shock the Championship and win the playoffs last season to begin with. Manchester United have made easy work of a few teams this season and it is tough to see them slipping up, even if Huddersfield’s talisman Aaron Mooy returns to the side after missing the defeat at Swansea last week because of a long return from Australia where he had been playing for his country the week before.
Key battle: Tommy Smith vs Anthony Martial
We have picked out Martial as the key man for United because he is the kind of player Tommy Smith will dread coming up against. As a converted striker, Martial will look to take Smith on more and cut inside, automatically getting United closer to the goal and Lukaku.
But the Frenchman can go on the outside as well, and exploit the space on the counter. Just as Tottenham did a few weeks ago, United will look to put Huddersfield on the back foot when they can and, in reality, it is very hard to see them putting up much of a fight, especially on current form. It could be a long afternoon.
