AC Milan’s revival could continue this weekend when they travel to Genoa. Gennaro Gattuso has been a Godsend since returning to the club as first-team boss. Milan are on a 13-match unbeaten run and breathing down the necks of Lazio in fourth place. By which we mean that they’re eight points behind with a game in hand.

Lazio have more immediate threats to worry about with two teams ahead of Milan in the queue for a Champions League place. If Milan can stay focused then they’ll be serious contenders to get back to the top table of European football, a place where many feel they belong.

However, there are other issues which could distract them from their league objective. At the time of writing, they’re preparing for a big Europa League tie against Arsenal. Not the daunting occasion of yesteryear but the Gunners are still capable of producing the odd competent performance. Gattuso has certainly been batting away the favourites tagged attached to Milan after the draw. He praised Arsene Wenger and said that he can’t be compared with the under-fire Frenchman, given that he has 30 years of experience in management. Could the fire still be in Wenger’s belly? It’s definitely in Gattuso’s, the Italian legend being as animated on the touchline as he was on the pitch. Former teammates like Andriy Shevchenko are wholly impressed by the effect he’s had on the team.

Yet Genoa shouldn’t be underestimated. They’ve won three of their last four matches and those include victories over Inter Milan and Lazio. They have a decent record against Milan and could be good value to halt the Gattuso revolution somewhat.
