France to win with a -2 handicap @ 12/5 with Paddy Power

France kick off their World Cup campaign with a clash against Australia in Group C. Les Bleus, led by their 1998 winning captain Didier Deschamps, have one of the best squads in the world and are fully expected to challenge for the big title this summer. But they cannot afford to look too far ahead of themselves; Australia are not the best team in the world, but they are experienced at World Cup level. They will keep their shape and look to frustrate France, and if the likes of Antoine Griezmann and Paul Pogba are not on form and motivated, their performance could lack intensity. That is something that simply must not happen, because Denmark are well placed and able to challenge for top spot in Group C themselves.

Led by veterans Tim Cahill and Mile Jedinak, the Socceroos will look to counter attack, but they shouldn’t be a match for France, in truth. Kylian Mbappé is expected to have a big World Cup having burst onto the scene with Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain over the past two years. A hard tackle by defender Adil Rami in training meant the squad held a collective breath over his fitness, but he has allayed their fears and should be fit enough to feature in the game. We expect that France will not have too many problems in getting three points to kick off their campaign in style.

Olivier Giroud is hoping to become the third top scorer in France’s history, and despite rarely featuring from the start for much of his club career in Arsenal and Chelsea, he is set to lead the line alongside Griezmann on Saturday. He can be found at 11/10 to score anytime, but Mbappé is another good option as first goalscorer at 10/3.
