Enable provides Frankie Dettori with record fifth Arc on Sunday afternoonPublished October 02, 2017
On Friday 13th August 2010 Newmarket staged a run-of-the-mill Class 4 two-year-old Maiden Stakes race worth just over four and a half thousand pound to the winner and while the first two horses home looked very promising juveniles none of the racegoers in attendance at that evening fixture could ever in their wildest dreams have anticipated the significance of that one mile contest run on rain-softened ground.
The half length winner, trained by the late-great Sir Henry Cecil, was none other than Frankel who would go on to become widely regarded as possibly the greatest Flat horse ever to have graced a racecourse while the runner-up Nathaniel was also destined to become a top class Group 1 performer with victories in the 2011 King George and Coral-Eclipse.
Khalid Abdullah’s great champion may have outshone his rival on the racecourse but as a sire Nathaniel has got the better of early exchanges in their new careers having produced the outstanding middle-distance filly Enable – who entered the world of horseracing greats with a comprehensive victory in the Qatar Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe at Chantilly on Sunday afternoon.
Wins in three Oaks for Enable – at Epsom, the Curragh and York as well as a King George elevated John Gosden’s inmate to the position of the leading middle-distance filly in Europe but only a clear-cut victory in France’s most famous race would propel her alongside the likes of Allez France, Zarkava and Treve as one of the best of her sex to claim the historic contest. Her many followers were destined not to be disappointed.

Sent off the 10-11 favourite the mount of Frankie Dettori provided the popular Sardinian with a record fifth success in the race following Lammtarra, Sakhee, Marienbard and Golden Horn and things could hardly have gone more to plan for the pair. After gaining a prominent early position from stall 2, tracking the Aidan O’Brien duo of Idaho and Order Of St George once Dettori asked his filly to go and win the race inside the last two furlongs it was only the minor placings which were left in doubt. The answer to that question was Cloth Of Stars and Ulysses.

Just what the future holds for Enable in unclear at the moment with another race this season looking unlikely but a four-year-old campaign is a distinct possibility. Few would bet against the combination coming back to France next year, this time at a re-vamped Longchamp where a second Arc awaits one of the best fillies we have seen in recent years.
