Colombia vs England preview, betting tips and prediction
Now the pressure ramps up on Southgate
England to win and BTTS @ 17/4 with Coral
There was a lot of debate surrounding England’s final Group G game with Belgium last week; it appeared that finishing second would put them in the ‘easier’ side of the draw, avoiding a potential quarter final tie with Brazil. Despite Gareth Southgate’s insistence he would try to win the game, his team selection, which included eight changes, and refusal to call on the cavalry when 1-0 down late on suggested he was happy enough with the defeat. As a result, the Three Lions face Colombia, who won Group H, on Tuesday night in Moscow. The pressure is on the team, but we believe they can get through to their first quarter final since the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
There weren’t many performances that suggested Southgate will decide against reinstating the vast majority of the side that were so convincing against Panama. Harry Kane is certain to come back in as he looks to add to his five goals at the top of the goalscoring charts, while Jesse Lingard and Dele Alli’s linkup play between defence and midfield was badly missed. Colombia’s major threats are obvious; Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez should be fit enough to start the game, while Juan Fernando Quintero has been a real bright spark. They didn’t have it all their own way in Group H and England certainly shouldn’t fear them, but they cannot underestimate them either.
Kane is at 6/5 to score anytime, but our tip from an England point of view is Lingard. The Manchester United man has scored once already, against Panama, but he has missed other chances and will be hoping to get more of them on Tuesday. For Colombia, Falcao is at 11/5, and that kind of value is tough to ignore.
