Celtic vs Bayern Munich preview, betting tips and predictions: Bhoys to succumb to Bayern attacking quality in Glasgow
Bayern Munich to win 3-0 @ 17/2 with Betfair
Bayern Munich to win and BTTS @ 13/10 with Betfair
Bayern Munich to win and Robert Lewandowski to score first @ 2/1 with Betfair
Celtic fans are famous for creating an atmosphere for their home games, particularly on a European night. The Bhoys have won a number of big Champions League clashes at Parkhead over the years, most famously against Barcelona in the 2012/13 Group Stage when Neil Lennon was the manager. With Brendan Rodgers in charge now, Celtic have dominated domestically and are currently over 50 games unbeaten, but the Northern Irishman is still waiting for his own legendary home European night of magic.
The 5-0 defeat to PSG was both understandable, given the attacking quality at the disposal of the French side, and damning. It showed the gulf in class between them and the continent’s top sides, of which Bayern are one, and that is why they are huge favourites. Bayern have been rejuvenated since they sacked Carlo Ancelotti and brought treble-winning coach Jupp Heynckes back to the club, closing a five-point gap to Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga and getting their mojo back. They’re strong, powerful and technical style is back in full flow and that is what will worry Celtic the most.
Rodgers has had a massive impact on Celtic, though, and they have improved a lot since the PSG defeat. A win in Belgium over Anderlecht has given them hope of at least securing a spot in the Europa League knockout rounds. They also stayed in the game at the Allianz Arena before eventually losing 3-0. The fans will hope to play a part in the game as a twelfth man, but will understand the magnitude of their opposition on Tuesday night.
When Robert Lewandowski around, Bayern will be favourites for most games. The Pole has scored 86 goals in just 105 goals for the German champions, and there is a good chance he will add to that record in Glasgow. Backing him to score first in an away win may seem like short value at 2/1 with Betfair, but given how prolific Lewandowski, an opportunity to double your money seems like too good one with the right stake behind it. For Celtic, Moussa Dembele and Scott Sinclair will cause some problems and although they could score, it isn’t likely to impact the result.
There isn’t as much value in BTTS at 13/10, but you cannot count the hosts out completely. In reality, this game may be very easy for Bayern, especially if Celtic do play like they did against PSG – our final tip is a 3-0 away win at 17/2 with Betfair.
Key battle: Kieran Tierney vs Arjen Robben
Even as he approaches the end of his career, Arjen Robben is still one of the world’s best wingers and facing him will be a real test for Kieran Tierney, a very highly rated defender for Celtic. Going forward, Tierney is a threat, but he might find it tough if Robben is cutting inside in his trademark style, he may find it tough. Stretching Celtic’s defence will be key for Bayern and that job will mainly sit with Robben.
