Boxing Betting Prediction: Back Vargas to Win 4/7 with Betfair on Sky Sport Fight Night in HullPublished February 23, 2017
On Saturday evening, unbeaten Yorkshireman Gavin McDonnell takes on Mexican Rey Vargas for the vacant WBC Super Bantamweight title at Hull’s Ice Arena.
Gavin McDonnell need only look to his twin brother Jamie, who is the current WBA bantamweight champion for inspiration, as he attempts to end Vargas’ unbeaten record and claim his first ever world title.
Rey Vargas may only be 5ft 7in but he packs a big punch, with his perfect record of 28 wins including an astonishing 22 knock-outs which will be something the Mexican will look to use against the slightly taller McDonnell at 5ft 10in.
McDonnell himself has a strong record of 16 wins and 2 draws from 18 total fights, with the Doncaster born fighter more of a grinder, which becomes even clearer when you see that in 10 less fights than Vargas, McDonnell has actually fought 10 rounds more than his opponent.
That’s not to say that Vargas cannot go the distance however, with the Mexican going the full twelve rounds back in July of last year against Alexis Kabore.
Rey Vargas is the bookies odds-on favourite to win at around 1/2 (1.50) across the win betting market. Arguably this price could be shorter given his record.
However, with this being his first bout outside North America, online bookmakers are cautiously keeping McDonnell’s betting odds under control, with plenty of money for the Yorkshireman coming in.
In what should be an entertaining bout, McDonnell certainly has the ability to beat Vargas, at least on points, but the Mexican’s consistency with the big hits may be too much. Vargas to win by KO.
Also in action on the undercard is impressive local boy Luke Campbell who takes on Jairo Lopez in a twelve round Lightweight contest. Campbell is a massive favourite for the bout.
Our boxing betting tip for this one is Campbell to win inside of six rounds.
