Bayern Munich must have feared the Champions League last 16 draw after finishing second in their group this season, while Besiktas, having beaten more experienced European sides like FC Porto and Monaco to top spot in theirs, must have been hoping to avoid one of the European heavy hitters. Despite the Turkish side’s hugely impressive showing in the campaign so far, they will have dreaded the prospect of facing Bayern who, as a consequence of missing out on being seeded in the knockouts, had to play the first leg at home. They used it to their advantage, though, by steamrolling their way to a 6-0 win and effectively ending the tie as a contest after 90 minutes in Bavaria.

All Besiktas can do now is hope to save face in front of their own fans, but Bayern are known for being ruthless and they will want to send a message to any and all potential rivals on their journey to a first European crown in five years. Jupp Heynckes, the man who led them to that 2013 triumph as part of an historic treble, has made a real impact since replacing Carlo Ancelotti as Bayern boss and they certainly cannot be ruled out as contenders. Besiktas remained unbeaten at home in the group stage, but we think the situation will be too difficult for them to handle.

As always, Bayern are in frightful form in both the Bundesliga and the Champions League. Over the last six games in all competitions, they have won five and scored 19 goals.

Besiktas are level on points at the top of their domestic league having won four of their last five games.

Team News

Manuel Neuer, Kingsley Coman and Corentin Tolisso are missing for Bayern, but they could welcome James Rodriguez back for this game.

Pepe is the only fresh issue for Besiktas to manage after he broke his toe last week.
