Arsenal have found their feet again after a poor start to the new campaign. Defeats at Stoke and Liverpool had put pressure on the Gunners but victories over Bournemouth in the Premier League and Koln in the Europa League were followed up by becoming the first team to stop Antonio Conte’s Chelsea from scoring at Stamford Bridge with a 0-0 draw last weekend.
West Brom, meanwhile, have struggled in the last two. First, they conceded three in a defeat to Brighton at the Amex Stadium before drawing 0-0 at home to West Ham, showing issues with both scoring goals and keeping them out. Arsenal may fancy their chances of keeping a clean sheet after the last two league games, but their frailties when it comes to defending set pieces were evident in last season’s defeat to West Brom at the Hawthorns, and given how the Baggies excel at them with such a physical presence, they will always have opportunities to score goals.
Alexis Sanchez could start the game having come off the bench against Chelsea. He could team up with Alexandre Lacazette, which would see the Gunners create a lot of chances. In the big games previously, Arsenal have failed to show the necessary discipline, but by starting neither Sanchez nor the injured Mesut Ozil last week, they found it easier to stick to their shape. Wenger will want a more expansive performance; especially considering West Brom will most likely keep everyone behind the ball and play it long to Salomon Rondon up front. Aaron Ramsey played particularly well, keeping his shape and not allowing Chelsea’s midfield space, but it will be down to him to force the issue this time.
We are backing goals in this game because it is a clash of two very different styles. Arsenal will have more than enough quality to break through West Brom’s low block and they will look to do it early so as to force the visitors to chase the game. But with freekicks, corners and crosses, West Brom can cause problems of their own. At 11/1 with Bet365, 3-1 to the home side is a really good opportunity.
Key battle: Aaron Ramsey vs Gareth Barry
Playing in this game will see Gareth Barry overtake Ryan Giggs as the highest appearance maker in Premier League history. The former England man has made a career out of solid, consistent performances in midfield, and he will need another if West Brom are to frustrate Arsenal on Monday night.
As mentioned above, Ramsey was particularly impressive at Chelsea because he kept his discipline, but at his best he looks to impact games going forward. There will not be a huge amount of threat for him to worry about stopping, so he will havw a licence to run with the ball and pick passes. Although Sanchez and Lacazette will be the headline grabbers, Ramsey will supply them with ammunition and it is Barry’s job to stop him.
