Newcastle travel to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium while in the middle of some very tough fixtures. At the time of writing, before the midweek games, Rafa Benitez’s side are floundering in the Premier League; six defeats in seven games have seen them slip from the top six to 16th, just two points above the drop zone, and they don’t look like improving anytime soon. A lot was made of their uninspiring transfer business in the summer and it looks like hurting them now; without serious investment in January, they are in danger of going straight back down to the Championship.
But the Gunners are quite inconsistent at the moment; they’ve been scoring goals for fun in some games but frustrated in others, notably against Manchester United and away at Southampton last weekend. With only one win at the Emirates in 11 years, Newcastle will not be confident of getting any points and neither are we. This one should be a banker home win.
Arsenal have been irresistible going forward at times this season, but the trio of Alexandre Lacazette, Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil all froze at St Mary’s last weekend and it was left to substitute Olivier Giroud to save a point late on. That followed a defeat to Manchester United, which ended their hopes of going the whole season unbeaten at home. The Gunners did end the Europa League group stage as top dogs with a 6-0 win over BATE Borisov, and with their consistency lacking domestically, right now it feels like a European run is their best hope of reaching the Champions League once again next season.

As already mentioned, Newcastle have been slipping down the table drastically in recent weeks and it is becoming very worrying for them. The lack of quality at their disposal is proving costly, and that will not help them against one of the best footballing teams in the league. They have conceded 16 goals in just six games, many more than they had up until that point this season. But with Jamaal Lascelles returning in defence, and Matt Ritchie and Dwight Gayle up front looking quite sharp, they will carry some sort of a threat and their hosts cannot take them lightly. They did score first at both Manchester United and Chelsea in the last month.
Arsenal do not have any fresh injury concerns but Olivier Giroud could be in line for a start up front. Wenger has not been afraid to drop Alexandre Lacazette before and he won’t be now. Jack Wilshere will also be pushing, and Theo Walcott could return to the squad.

After a mini injury crisis, Newcastle will start Jamaal Lascelles and Christian Atsu at the Emirates, and it could be the first time since six minutes into the opening game of the season that Paul Dummett is fit enough to play.
