Argentina vs Nigeria preview, betting tips and prediction
The pressure is certainly on La Albiceleste
Score draw @ 4/1 with Paddy Power
Argentina were supporting Nigeria in their win over Iceland last week, but now they’ll turn their attention to beating them in the final game to reach the World Cup last 16. On paper, La Albiceleste have the individual quality to not only win Group D, but go far in the World Cup. But they are the best example of how that is not enough; they lack cohesion, balance and a real plan and as a result are facing up to the possibility of being knocked out at the group stage. Nigeria looked really good against Iceland, playing with pace, verve and purpose. It will be tough and we think, having beaten Argentina in a friendly last November, the Super Eagles can get a crucial draw.
Ahmed Musa scored both of Nigeria’s goals in the Iceland game; he and Kelechi Iheanacho caused real problems up front. Against Croatia, they played with so much fear, neglecting their attacking responsibilities. They showed what they could do in the last game and must continue in the same way. Reports say Argentina have effectively relieved Jorge Sampaoli of his duties; they may be a little premature but he must change the system to be more organised. Lionel Messi is the greatest player of all time in the opinion of many people, but he cannot do everything by himself.
Messi is odds on to score anytime, as he always is, but there are decent odds on him to score first; 13/5. Because Sampaoli has such a wide array of talent, it is hard to see who he will pick to start. Higuaín came off the bench for Sergio Agüero, and he can be found at 6/5, while Agüero himself is at 11/10. Our Nigerian tip is Kelechi Iheanacho anytime, at 11/4. We see goals in this game.
