Harry Maguire, Walker’s England teammate, scored an equaliser after Sadio Mane’s opening goal in the second minute of the game. It means Jürgen Klopp’s side stretch their lead at the top of the table to five points, but they could have been sitting seven points clear after Newcastle shocked Walker’s City the day before at St James’ Park.

Salomon Rondon and Matt Ritchie struck in the second half to secure three points after Sergio Agüero netted after just 26 seconds.

In the summer at the World Cup, Maguire was given the ‘meme treatment’ when a photograph of him talking to some girls was taken, and many fans suggested he was trying to impress them. In that style, Walker has put the photo on Twitter with the caption “So basically, they thought they were going 7 points clear.

The right-back deleted the post less than half an hour later, but Liverpool fans can’t have been happy to see what they did.

They are still favourites to lift a first Premier League title and first crown since 1990 generally, despite dropping points against a team outside of the top six for the first time this campaign. Whether he thought about deleting the post himself or he was told to by someone at City remains to be seen.

City now have another rough game on Sunday, as they host an Arsenal side pushing for a Champions League spot. Pep Guardiola’s men won the corresponding fixture on the opening day at the Emirates Stadium, but a lot has happened since then.

Liverpool could be just two points clear at the top of the table by the time they kick off against West Ham on the Monday Night Football at the London Stadium.

This could be one of the best title races in recent times, and judging by Walker’s tweet, it could be getting more personal.
