‘A work of art’: Twitter reacts to stunning Messi goalPublished January 09, 2017
Lionel Messi was the talk of social media on Sunday night after netting a stunning late free-kick to salvage a point for Barcelona against Villarreal.
Trailing 1-0 thanks to Nicola Sansone’s sweetly-struck effort in the 50th minute, the Blaugrana seemed to be set to slump to their third defeat of the campaign before the Argentine’s moment of magic.
With 90 minutes on the clock, Messi stepped up to bend a set-piece into the top corner of the hosts’ goal, leaving goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo rooted to the spot.

And following the superb strike, Twitter was awash with praise for the man voted second best in the world at the recent Ballon d’Or ceremony.
Here’s what social media had to say about Messi’s latest rescue act.

But not everyone chose to focus on Messi’s role in the goal…
Pretty poor from Asenjo, that one. Big step to his left made it easy for Messi.— Chris Smith (@cdsmith789) January 8, 2017
And some worried Barcelona have become too dependent on their talisman…
Messi scored or assisted 82% of Barca's goals this season. Honestly can't remember a team so dependent on one player— ????barca (@cuIegirI) January 9, 2017
