Arsene Wenger has claimed he doesn’t understand why Alexis Sanchez left Arsenal to join Manchester United, and admitted that the player could well have chased the money.

He claimed the club did everything in their power to keep the player, but that they cannot compete on the same level as a club like Manchester United financially, and that’s the basic reason Alexis left.
Of course, many people will feel Alexis left for far more than money, and if he wanted one final big contract, there were other clubs on the table, and China could have been an option – along with waiting another six months and securing a massive signing on fee had he gone on a free – however, he decided to get another six months of Champions League football and a real shot at going further in the competition before fighting for the league with Manchester United next term and being their star man – something that would not have been the case at Man City.
Arsenal meanwhile are launching from one crisis to another, and are also set to lose Mesut Ozil come the summer, and while a 4-1 win over Crystal Palace may keep the Wenger Out chants locked up until next week, the fact remains – they’re not looking strong enough to get into the top four and are miles off fighting for the real trophies in club football.
Despite that, Wenger was not pleased, and he claimed the Gunners went as far as they could go – and then mentioned the contract United have offered.
Standard Sport report he said: “I understand nothing.
“You ask me how can I understand that you want to leave Arsenal.
“One thing when you make transfers for 30 years you know a lot about human beings. He’s professional. It’s his last contract, maybe, at the top level and it was an important contract.

“After that, I accept that. We accept to let him go. We analysed the pros and the cons. We did what we had to do. We went as far as we could go.”
