Virgil van Dijk grabbed the headlines with his last-gasp equaliser for Holland against Germany last night, but he deserves credit for a smaller gesture on the night.
The draw secured the Oranje’s place in the semi finals of the Nations League to take place in Portugal next summer, while Die Mannschaft were relegated to League B.

But noticing how distressed referee Ovidiu Hategan was after the death of his mother, van Dijk comforted him.
“That man broke down, stood with tears in his eyes because he had just lost his mother,” he said.

“I wished him strength and said that he had blown [sic] well. It’s a small thing, but maybe it helps him.”
This heartwarming moment shows the class van Dijk has. It was a very good comeback from Holland, too, having been two goals down in the first half.
Germany’s issues still remain, though.
