Ross Barkley is considering his future at Everton following interest from Tottenham Hostpur, according to reports.

The highly-rated midfielder has endured a frustrating season to date, flittering in and out of the Toffees side after failing to find the consistency to impress manager Ronald Koeman.

Academy graduate Barkley made a successful return to the starting lineup in Tuesday’s impressive 2-1 home victory over Arsenal, setting up Ashley Williams’ late winner, but that has not stopped speculation over a potential exit.

The Telegraph claims that Mauricio Pochettino has identified the powerful playmaker as the ideal acquisition to get the best out of England international teammate Harry Kane, with summer signing Moussa Sissoko as yet failing to find any semblance of form at White Hart Lane.

Doubts continue to linger over Barkley’s long-term role at Goodison Park, with Koeman vocal in his criticism of the youngster’s work-rate off the ball.

The Dutchman is himself known to be targeting several additions in the midfield and is reputedly closing in on moves for Morgan Schneiderlin and Alan Dzagoev as part of the overhaul.

It remains to be seen if this puts Barkley’s future at the club in doubt, but Pochettino could seek to take advantage of the situation by placing a big-money bid for his services and offering regular first-team football.

A £35 million January bid has been mooted by the paper, although it is believed to be unlikely that the Blues would consider selling a key squad player half-way through the Premier League season.

As such, any transfer would be far more likely in the summer as clubs are afforded an extended period of time to make changes to their squads.

Despite a new contract also being in the pipeline for the home-grown talent, the Daily Mail writes that Everton chiefs face a challenge to persuade the Barkley that he can fulfil his early promise on Merseyside.

The 23-year-old has scored 3 goals in 19 games so far this campaign, including a free-kick in the opening day draw against Spurs.
