Thomas Vermaelen has an interesting clause in his Barcelona contractPublished December 06, 2016
Thomas Vermaelen was one of the footballers caught in the latest wave of publications by Football Leaks. The Belgian defender, currently on loan at AS Roma, had the details of his Barcelona contract made public. It turns out that his deal with the Spanish giants has a very interesting clause.
As Le Soir explain, FC Barcelona is such a proud symbol of Catalonia that its representatives must make an effort to learn about the culture. Indeed, a clause in Vermaelen’s contract states that he is obliged to attempt to learn Catalan. The club presumably hooked him up with a proficient teacher.
The chances are that Vermaelen needn’t take any more lessons. He’s unlikely to play for Barcelona again. The 31-year-old only made 21 appearances in all competitions over two seasons due to injury problems. Barca agreed to pay Arsenal bonus fees if the defender made a certain number of appearances. The Gooners shouldn’t hold their breath about that add-on.
