Loris Karius has had a few sleepless nights after Saturday’s Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid after gifting both Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale goals with fatal errors. Real went on to win their third-straight European crown and a thirteenth in all.
It remains to be seen whether the 24-year-old German will remain the Reds’ number one beyond the summer, but his mistakes have got us all nostalgic, so here are ten of the most embarrassing and high profile mistakes in football.

A goalkeeper should never be beaten at their near post, and nobody knew that better than Moacir Barbosa, who was blamed for Brazil’s loss at the 1950 World Cup to Uruguay; the “Tragedy of the Maracana”.
Irish goalkeeper Paddy Bonner was something of a stalwart for his country, but on his 77th appearance, he made a fatal error that cost the Boys in Green on the biggest stage of all against Holland.
Rene Higuita is famous for a save he made against England, but years earlier, at Italia ’90, he was dispossessed bu Cameroon hero Roger Milla, who rolled the ball into an empty net.
Mention the name Ronaldinho to David Seaman and the cold sweats will start, but seven years before that famous goal at the 2002 World Cup, Seaman was involved in a similar situation during the 1995 Cup Winners’ Cup final with Real Zaragoza for Arsenal.
Perhaps we have saved the best until last; Karius was unfortunate, but he should have seen Karim Benzema coming. He then compounded his own misery by failing to stop Bale’s speculative effort.
