Ten Of The Most Embarrassing Goalkeeping Errors Of All Time

Loris Karius has had a few sleepless nights after Saturday’s Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid after gifting both Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale goals with fatal errors. Real went on to win their third-straight European crown and a thirteenth in all.

It remains to be seen whether the 24-year-old German will remain the Reds’ number one beyond the summer, but his mistakes have got us all nostalgic, so here are ten of the most embarrassing and high profile mistakes in football.

10. Rob Green, England vs USA, World Cup 2010

Fabio Capello was leading England into the last World Cup of the ‘golden generation’ and Steven Gerrard had given them the lead early on in their first group game against the United States. But later on in the first half, Clint Dempsey shot from distance only for the to avert Rob Green’s attempts at collection. It rolled painfully under him and, in truth, he has never fully recovered from that moment.

9. Thibaut Courtois, Zenit St Petersburg vs Atletico Madrid, Champions League, 2013

Atletico Madrid would go on to win La Liga and reach the final of the Champions League in 2013/14, but highly-rated goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, on loan from Chelsea, would make a horrendous error in a group stage match at Zenit St Petersburg, which ended 1-1.

8. Oliver Kahn, Germany vs Brazil, World Cup 2002

The World Cup final is the one game you don’t want to make an error, but even the great Oliver Kahn wasn’t above doing so. Ronaldo inspired Brazil to their sixth crown in 2002, but with the help of Kahn’s spillage in the final in Yokohama.

7. Petr Cech, Greece vs Czech Republic, Euro 2012

Petr Cech is one of the best goalkeepers of his generation and a long time star of the Czech Republic national team. But here he is making a shocking error at Euro 2012, leading top a goal for 2004 winners Greece.

6. Scott Carson, England vs Croatia, Euro 2008

Steve McClaren handed a young Carson his England debut in a Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia that he simply had to win to qualify. The pitch was not great at Wembley and the rain was pouring down, but Carson will be haunted by Niko Kranjcar’s shot from distance forever. England lost, missed out on the Euros and McClaren was swiftly sacked.

5. Moacir Barbosa, Brazil vs Uruguay, 1950

A goalkeeper should never be beaten at their near post, and nobody knew that better than Moacir Barbosa, who was blamed for Brazil’s loss at the 1950 World Cup to Uruguay; the “Tragedy of the Maracana”.

4. Paddy Bonner, Holland vs Republic of Ireland, World Cup 1994

Irish goalkeeper Paddy Bonner was something of a stalwart for his country, but on his 77th appearance, he made a fatal error that cost the Boys in Green on the biggest stage of all against Holland.

3. Rene Higuita, Colombia vs Cameroon, World Cup 1990

Rene Higuita is famous for a save he made against England, but years earlier, at Italia ’90, he was dispossessed bu Cameroon hero Roger Milla, who rolled the ball into an empty net.

2. David Seaman, Real Zaragoza vs Arsenal, 1995

Mention the name Ronaldinho to David Seaman and the cold sweats will start, but seven years before that famous goal at the 2002 World Cup, Seaman was involved in a similar situation during the 1995 Cup Winners’ Cup final with Real Zaragoza for Arsenal.

1. Loris Karius, Real Madrid vs Liverpool, 2018

Perhaps we have saved the best until last; Karius was unfortunate, but he should have seen Karim Benzema coming. He then compounded his own misery by failing to stop Bale’s speculative effort.
