Sunderland preparing to pip Manchester United to the signing of talented £10m-rated defenderPublished January 30, 2017
Sunderland could be set to beat Manchester United to the signing of Celtic’s Kieran Tierney before Tuesday night’s deadline.
The highly-rated 19-year-old defender has attracted interest from a number of Premier League clubs following a string of promising performances for the Hoops both in the Scottish Premiership and the Champions League, with United representatives said to have been particularly prominent at recent Parkhead matches.
After manager Jose Mourinho’s high-profile spat with Luke Shaw, the Red Devils are believed to be on the hunt for a new left-back, but Sunderland may have leapt to the front of the queue for Tierney’s signature, according to the Daily Express.
The paper claims that, following the £14m sale of Patrick van Aanholt to Crystal Palace, the Black Cats have money to spend on a new attacking full-back for David Moyes’ system.
Experienced Everton defender Bryan Oviedo is already on Wearside to complete a medical ahead of a permanent switch, together with Toffees teammate Darron Gibson, but Tierney has emerged as a younger target for the long-term position.
Now, a bid of £10m is reportedly in the offing for the Manx-born starlet, with Sunderland now favourites to beat United to his signature.
Tierney has made 57 starts for Celtic, assisting an impressive 18 goals for Brendan Rodgers’ side and is also a full Scotland international.
