Ipswich Town have identified Steven Gerrard as a surprise candidate to replace the departed Mick McCarthy at the end of the season.
McCarthy was always going to leave when the current campaign came to a close, but decided to walk away from Portman Road early after fans, who were already disillusioned with his reign, reacted badly to a substitution he made in a recent win over Barnsley.
There have been a number of names speculated about, but Gerrard’s has come out of left field. The 37-year-old, who retired from playing in 2016, has been managing the Liverpool under-18s, while balancing his work as a pundit with BT Sport.
The former England midfielder was linked with the MK Dons job a matter of weeks after his retirement, but he said it had come too soon. It remains to be seen whether he will have a different attitude this time around.
