Ronaldo was in Madrid for a court appearance relating to a tax evasion charge, and he posted a picture of himself posing on the plane. He has been widely condemned by many people, who claim he shouldn’t have had more self awareness given the situation with Sala.

The 28-year-old was due to start training with Cardiff on Tuesday and was flying to the Welsh capital overnight after waving goodbye to his his former teammates at Nantes on Monday. He was expected to fly overnight and arrive in Wales ready to start a new chapter in his career in the Premier League.

There is still no sign of the aircraft which had two people on board, Sala and the pilot, and a second full day of searching over the English Channel is underway. Though some debris has been found, there is no word yet as to whether this could be in connection with the tragic incident.

Cardiff and Nantes have begun to pay tributes to the striker, who cost £15million after scoring 12 Ligue 1 goals this season, fewer than just Kylian Mbappe, Edinson Cavani, Nicolas Pepe and the world’s most expensive footballer of all time, Neymar.

Ronaldo’s post has been met with condemnation across the footballing world, with former England striker Gary Lineker leading the criticism. But the Portuguese superstar has not deleted or commented on the situation since.

Shortly after the story of Sala’s disappearance on Tuesday, Cardiff released this statement: We were very shocked upon hearing the news that the plane had gone missing. We expected Emiliano to arrive last night into Cardiff and today was due to be his first day with the team.

“Our owner, Tan Sri Vincent Tan, and chairman, Mehmet Dalman, are all very distressed about the situation.

“We made the decision first thing this morning to call off training with the thoughts of the squad, management staff and the entire Club with Emiliano and the pilot.

“All of us at Cardiff City FC would like to thank our fans, and the entire footballing family for their support at this difficult time.

“We continue to pray for positive news.”

The search continues as everyone hopes and prays for positive news.
