Ronaldo and Messi excluded from Top 10 trending footballers on Google in 2016
The annual Google Year in Search survey has thrown up some mind-blowing results from the world of football, not featuring Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi in their list of most Googled players.
Topping the list in perhaps least surprising fashion is Manchester United record signing Paul Pogba, who picks up Google searches for dabbing and all sorts as well as footballing brilliance.
Leicester City’s Premier League success also turned two of their leading stars into household names, with Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy both making the top 10.
10. Riyad Mahrez – Leicester City
9. Dimitri Payet – West Ham
8. Luis Nani – Valencia
7. Shkodran Mustafi – Arsenal
6. Marcus Rashford – Manchester United
5. Alex Teixeira – Jiangsu Suning
4. Antoine Griezmann – Atletico Madrid
3. Will Grigg – Wigan
2. Jamie Vardy
1. Paul Pogba
How both Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi escaped the top 10, we’ll never know. These are two of the best at what they and when it comes to social media we’re always talking about them.
Especially given the year both players had. Messi controversially retired from international football before returning, and 2016 was Ronaldo’s most successful year yet.
I guess too many people were hoping to see Will Grigg set on fire, or Jamie Vardy neck a bottle of WDK, than see the world-class magic that Ronaldo and Messi have in abundance.
