Former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has said that Stoke City were the hardest Premier League opponents he faced.
Van Persie, who won the title at United in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season before retirement, has just finished the season with his boyhood club Feyenoord.
But looking back on his career, he says he is starting to feel the impact of playing st the top level, before mentioning how tough it was to go to the Bet365 Stadium.
“I have been in pain for years, but pain comes at certain levels”, he told VI.nl.
“Football at the highest level isn’t without sacrifices. Playing in the Premier League for years takes its toll.
“That is football at the highest level, so bad that I experienced Champions League matches as friendlies. Suddenly you have two, three metres to control a ball, without being hacked.
“Well, against Swansea City away, something like that was impossible. Those kind of teams didn’t give me a metre.
“Or Stoke City, with the wind whistling through the stadium. I was always in the starting XI, and always it was a battle. Stoke City away was the toughest match in the whole world.”
