Leicester City star Riyad Mahrez put in a fairly inept display during the season’s curtain-raising Community Shield final against Manchester United on the weekend, could that be down to the fact that the Algerian international had his mind on other things?

The 25-year-old played a key role in Leicester City’s shock Premier League title triumph last term, racking up 17 goals and 11 assists in domestic league action alone, and there has been a great deal of speculation that he would follow N’Golo Kante to the King Power Stadium exit doors.

And it now appears he may well be following Kante to Stamford Bridge.

Reports on the excellent Chelsea blog We Ain’t Got No History lend weight to such talk as they cover Italian journalist @AlessandroLdn during his recent trip to the Chelsea Harbour Hotel, where he was scheduled to inteview compatriot Conte, and who should he happen to meet whilst there…

We’re not ones to deal in salacious gossip…oh what the hell…yes we are.

Chelsea fans would no doubt love to see Mahrez line up in their colours but one wonders where such a deal would leave the likes of Willian, Oscar or Pedro, given that Eden Hazard would presumably a safe inclusion in Conte’s starting eleven plans following his excellent run of form at the close of the 2015/16 campaign.

Conte has already strengthened his squad with the inclusions of the aforementioned Kante as well as £33m Belgian forward Michy Batshuayi but the West London side have also handily banked around £22m from the sales of Mohamed Salah and Papy Djilobodji and no doubt Blues owner Roman Abramovich has seen the spending going on over at Manchester United.

Abramovich has no issues with digging deep into his cavernous pockets when necessary and a new manager brings with him a new set of player acquisition demands and the addition of Mahrez, for a fee of around £40m, looks very likely indeed.
