The two market leaders fought out the finish to the 2018 William Hill St Leger at Doncaster on Saturday afternoon. But it was 3-1 second favourite Kew Gardens who prevailed by two and a quarter lengths on Town Moor, with the well-supported 7-4 chance Lah Ti Dar having to settle for second spot, losing her unbeaten record in the process.
The fact that the battle-hardened winner was having his twelfth outing, a career which so far has taken in seven Group contests, probably proved the deciding factor in the final Classic of the season with Frankie Dettori’s mount still looking far from the finished article on only her fourth start, the daughter of Dubawi having not raced as a juvenile. In the hands of Ryan Moore Kew Gardens, who was always prominent, went for home at the two furlong marker from which point the Aidan O’Brien-trained colt never looked like being caught.
The son of Galileo who had tasted Group 1 success for the first time when landing the Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp back in July was supply the master of Ballydoyle with St Leger win number six before trainer and jockey had to make a speedy exit in order to attend Leopardstown for the first day of Irish Champions weekend. Before flying off by helicopter from Doncaster O’Brien took time to give a quick interview, saying: “ We’re over the moon with him.
“ We always thought he was a horse who would stay well and we were delighted with what he did in France ( winning the Grand Prix de Paris ) and at York ( third in Great Voltigeur ). We always felt he had a lot of class and this extra distance was what he wanted.” O’Brien also supplied the third horse home in Southern France, albeit at a respectful four and a half lengths behind the runner-up. Kew Gardens was cut into between 12-1 and 16-1 with most bookmakers for next months Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp although Ladbrokes still go 25-1 behind 5-4 favourite Enable.
