It was even revealed by the Times that Arsenal and Manchester City had a verbal agreement for Sanchez to move to the Etihad in a £60million move but Arsene Wenger’s side did not plan for one specific thing.
That would prove to be the rejection of Thomas Lemar following an accepted £92million bid from the Gunners, who had hoped the Frenchman would come in to replace their outbound star.
The Times report that Arsenal’s Ivan Gazidis had told Manchester City executive Ferran Soriano that a deal had been agreed with Monaco for Lemar and that the club should stay on standby to complete a deal for Sanchez so that everything moved swiftly.
Though, it was clear Arsenal did not plan for the personal rejection of Lemar even after sending the charm offensive on the player in the form of Alexandre Lacazette, Olivier Giroud, and Laurent Koscielny.
Now, Arsenal face losing Alexis Sanchez on a free next summer with the Chilean able to agree a pre-contract agreement with any club from January which could see him joining Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola once and for all.
