Report: Arsenal line up shock bid for Manchester United ace
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has reportedly identified Anthony Martial as a backup target if the Gunners fail to sign AS Monaco’s Kylian Mbappe.
The 21-year-old enjoyed a memorable first season at Old Trafford under Louis van Gaal, scoring 18 goals and providing 11 assists in 56 appearances in all competitions as he emerged as one of United’s top players.
However, last season was one to forget for the Frenchman, who was questioned publicly an array by new manager Jose Mourinho. Martial scored just eight goals and created as many in 42 outings
According to The Daily Mail, Wenger is ready to bid £40m to prise the French international away from their Premier League rivals, but it’s added that given the animosity between him and Mourinho, it’s unlikely that a deal will happen.
Mbappe is not only a more expensive option, but he’s younger and has only ever played in Ligue 1. Despite being the hottest name in the market this summer, he’s only done it one season, and there’s a degree of unwarranted hype going the rounds.
Now, we’re not saying Mbappe doesn’t have incredible amounts of potential, or that the praise isn’t deserved. Let’s wait and see if he does it next season — hopefully in a more competitive league — and lights up the Champions League again for a consecutive year.
Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane is also believed to be watching Mbappe. In a quest to get ‘the next best thing’, Los Blancos will fork out whatever money it takes, and they have the funds to blow clubs such as Arsenal out of the water.
