Real Madrid are set to launch a shock bid to sign Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso before the Spanish transfer deadline at the end of August.
Julen Lopetegui has identified left back as an area of his squad he wants to improve, and Madrid-both Alonso would create good competition for Brazilian Marcelo. Los Blancos are said to be preparing a £27million bid, but it is unlikely Chelsea will sell for that given they cannot sign a replacement. His current contract runs until 2021.
Alonso was hardly an exciting arrival when he joined the Blues from Fiorentina under Antonio Conte in 2016, but he has grown into a fan’s favourite since.
Real are short on options after loaning Theo Hernandez to Real Sociedad, and they will hope that their dealings with Chelsea for goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois will help them find common ground over Alonso, who has featured for Maurizio Sarri at Stamford Bridge already this season.
