Real Madrid and Liverpool in race to sign £35m 'German Ronaldo'Published February 22, 2017
Liverpool’s hopes of luring top target Julian Brandt to Anfield have been dealt a blow after Real Madrid joined the race to sign the talented German.
The 20-year-old winger has been on Reds manager Jurgen Klopp’s radar for some time, with the ex-Dortmund boss believed to be preparing to raid former rivals Bayer Leverkusen for the talented youngster upon completion of the current campaign.
But Liverpool’s attempt to strike a deal has been complicated by the news that Spanish giants Real have also taken a shine to the player.
According to the Liverpool Echo, scouts for the La Liga club were in attendance at Leverkusen’s 4-2 home defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday evening to run the rule over Brandt.
It remains to be seen if a formal offer will materialise from Real for a player deemed to be one of the most promising young stars in European football, however, his performances in the Bundesliga this season are sure to have impressed their recruitment team.
Whatever happens with Brandt, Liverpool will look to bring in at least one winger over the summer as Klopp bids to add to his attacking options.
The absence of forward Sadio Mane for the Africa Cup of Nations in January coincided with the Reds’ worst run of form so far this season, and the 49-year-old will seek to rectify that particular weakness during the close season.
Demarai Gray of Leicester City has also been heavily linked with a move to Merseyside in recent weeks.
